Early morning, before the café terraces along the quai Jean Jaurès fill up, the port shows its real face. Water laps against hulls, the smell of coffee drifts into salt air, and the ochre facades of the old basin catch the first flat light of the day. It was that same light, in 1892, that made Paul Signac tie up his yacht here and never quite leave, turning a quietly obscure Var fishing village into an unlikely centre of modern art.
The port now covers 9 hectares across two basins, with more than 729 berths. The quai de l'Épi divides the old basin from the modern harbour, where superyachts of up to 75 metres line up along the môle. A handful of traditional pointus still bob a few metres away. That gap, wooden fishing boat to nine-figure yacht, is not decorative: it carries five centuries of maritime history in a single glance.
Each autumn, the port reinvents itself. The pleasure fleet clears out to make room for around 250 sailing boats from across the world for Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, the regatta born in 1981 from a lunch bet between two skippers. Amateur painters still set up easels along the quayside, unknowingly continuing what Signac, Matisse and Derain started. The Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, founded in 1862, keeps racing on the water year-round. The port also holds "Clean Ports" and "Clean Ports Active in Biodiversity" certifications.
Pedestrian access is free and open all year. Come before the season does.
