With all the yachts and the poolside rosé, it's easy to forget: Saint-Tropez grows its own wine. Has done for over a century. Torpez, the village cooperative officially known as Vignobles de Saint-Tropez, tends around 180 hectares of Côtes de Provence across the peninsula, producing rosé, red and white under a name that carries real weight in Provence.
Right now, though, that weight feels more like a burden. The cooperative is caught between two simultaneous legal procedures: a court-supervised receivership opened by the tribunal judiciaire de Draguignan in May, and an ongoing criminal investigation into traceability practices, led by the specialised wine and spirits enforcement unit of the DREETS. Two cases at once. Unprecedented for a Provence cooperative of this standing.
In a terse press release, the cave acknowledged it was « collaborating fully with state authorities » following an administrative inspection. It framed the receivership as a tool to « support the continuation of activity and find lasting solutions ». The administration, for its part, was careful to clarify that no seals have been placed on the tanks.
But the growers aren't softening it. They describe a whole sector in distress: declining consumption, relentless price pressure, rising production costs. The crisis isn't specific to Saint-Tropez; it runs through French viticulture at large. Still, it lands differently here, in a village where the name alone has always been expected to carry more than the volumes ever quite justified.
