Café des Arts

Très bien

By eight in the morning, the terrace is already filling up. The platanes on place des Lices break the light into shifting patches, chairs scrape across stone, someone asks for a café crème. The Café des Arts opens early and holds on until one in the morning, every day of the week, which makes it one of the few places in the village running that kind of schedule year-round, through season and off-season alike.

Tuesdays and Saturdays, when the market takes over the square, the mood shifts. People arrive with baskets piled high, claim the first free chair, and settle in without hurry. The kitchen keeps things simple: salade niçoise, steak-frites, mussels when they're around. Straightforward French brasserie food, nothing more intended. Pricing stays reasonable for a spot this central.

But the real reason to come is the position. Full south exposure, platanes a century old casting shade across the tables, the terrace offers one of the better vantage points in Saint-Tropez for watching an afternoon dissolve. For the apéritif, order a Suze. That's what people do here, and it would be strange to resist.

The Café des Arts is not a destination for the cooking. It's a destination because place des Lices still works the way it used to, and this terrace sits right in the middle of it.
